An in-depth assessment of the socioeconomic impact of tinnitus has been conducted. The methodology for this objective included a systematic literature review on healthcare and societal costs of tinnitus, leading to the development of a survey questionnaire, and an empirical study using this questionnaire. The results of the review revealed a significant gap in knowledge about the economic burden of tinnitus, with only a few studies providing limited data. The empirical study examined out-of- pocket (OOP) expenses related to tinnitus in 679 participants in Europe. The results highlighted high out-of-pocket expenditures and revealed variations based on tinnitus severity. The total annual out-of-pocket expenditures for tinnitus in the studied countries exceeded 17 billion euros. The findings emphasized the financial burden of tinnitus, including work absenteeism, and indicated a correlation between increased tinnitus severity and decreased quality of life.
